Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
Ephesians 6:18 NLT
These are all student athletes no coaches participated in the prayer. (It is sad that I even feel the need to mention this fact.)
Pray in the Spirit at all Times…
I shared this story about the young captain with the women in my small group at church. I asked the women to pray that God would strengthen the young captain and give him the boldness and courage to call the team to prayer again. The following Saturday I sat in the stands watching the team gather for prayer. I praised God for His faithfulness, and for strengthening this young man.
Later that day I found the following prayer in my email from a woman in my small group.
This email prayer was sent just minutes before the young captain gathered the team in prayer.
By His power He may bring to fruition… your every deed prompted by faith.
that our God may make you worthy of his calling,
and that by his power he may bring to fruition
our every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.
2 Thessalonians 1:11
Gage's classmates spearheaded a fundraising campaign which raised over $35,000 to assist the Garmo family with medical bills, and they conducted a social media blitz which garnered the attention of the rap artist Eminem, who visited Gage at his home two nights before his passing. You can still see sticker’s around town with the social media #GarmoStrong.
Gage was described by friends and family as selfless. Gage was reportedly more concerned with how his friends were handling his illness than he was concerned for himself. Gage inspired his fellow classmates to strive for something beyond themselves.
Many of Gage’s classmates and concerned community members gathered together in prayer at the high school football field the night before his passing. Political correctness was of no concern; the community came together inspired by Gage’s strength and selflessness, and for concern for Gage, and his family. All those who gathered together in prayer publicly, cultivated seeds of faith in the lives of the students at the high school as well as all those who watched through the lens of social media.
My oldest son is a varsity lacrosse player, and his younger brother is the team water-boy. My sons and the sons of other women of faith are bowed in prayer with the young lacrosse captain. It is my hope that the young captain’s acts of faith will inspire his fellow seniors and underclassmen to publicly proclaim their faith in the One true God.
We are to continually hold one another up in prayer asking God to strengthen each other to obey His will and His calling on our lives. If we do not continue in prayer we are depriving one other of God's strength, and we are missing out on the joy of witnessing the power of prayer.
Time to share: Have you witnessed a public act of faith that inspired you or someone you know?
